Introduction to Electricity for Operators & Supervisors
June 3-5  -  Hilton Garden Inn
Birmingham, Alabama

This 2 ½ day course provides a basic introduction to electricity and common electrical equipment.  This course is designed for the operator and supervisor and focuses on the practical concepts and actual type of equipment typically found at compressors stations.  The course provides a basic understanding of basic electrical concepts, describes common electrical equipment, and provides practice field guidance for the operation and monitoring of electrical equipment.

Course Content

  • Electric theory (AC -v- DC, voltage, current, frequency, single and 3-phase power, power factor, and real, reactive, and apparent power)
  • Electrical schematics (one-line and three-line drawings, MCC drawings, P&IDs, conduit and termination schedules, and electrical area classifications)
  • Operation and construction of common electrical equipment (MCC, transformers, breakers, fuses, switches, protective devices)
  • Operation and construction of electric generators and associated equipment (automatic transfer switches, synchronizing panels, and load sharing)
  • Operation and construction of electric motors (induction and synchronous, nameplates, and power/speed calculations)
  • Operation and monitoring of typical motor controlling devices (simple combination motor starters, VFDs, reduced voltage starters, synchronizing panels, and exciters)
  • Simple controls and instrumentation (ladder logic, PLC/DCS systems, digital and analog controls (inputs/outputs), and PID control loops)
